Dear Fox Advertiser

Dear Fox Advertiser,
I am writing to ask your company to take a simple step that may well save...

Dear Fox Advertiser,

I am writing to ask your company to take a simple step that may well save lives in the future. And it is not unimportant that taking this action will remove your company and its products from any connection to what could very likely be an unpleasant tragedy, should things remain as they are today. On behalf of my organization, and many others like it, I ask that you cease advertising on the Fox News Channel.

This is neither a hollow request, nor one rhetorically made. There is an urgency to it born of our own direct experience as the target of a would-be assassin inspired by Fox's Glenn Beck Show.

On July 19th of this year, I arrived at our San Francisco office to learn that a misguided person carrying numerous guns and body armor had been on his way to start a "revolution" by murdering my colleagues and me. The Oakland Police Department called to tell us that, following a 12 minute shootout with the California Highway Patrol, law enforcement officials arrested an assailant who had targeted the Tides Foundation, an organization which I founded and currently serve as CEO, and the ACLU for violence. To say we were "shocked" does not adequately describe our reaction. Imagine, for a moment, that you were us and, had it not been for a sharp eyed highway patrolman, a heavily armed man in full body armor would have made it to your office with the intent to kill you and your colleagues. His motive? Apparently, it was because the charitable, nonpartisan programs we run are deemed part of a conspiracy to undermine America and the capitalist system, which is hogwash.

Although not a political organization, the Tides Foundation has been a frequent target of misinformation, propaganda, and outright lies by Fox News' Glenn Beck. Since his arrival at Fox in early 2009, Beck has repeatedly vilified Tides, suggesting we are intent on "creat[ing] a mass organization to seize power." He accuses the foundation of indoctrination and says we are "involved in some of the nastiest of the nasty." Beck tells viewers that Tides has "funneled" money to "some of the most extreme groups on the left" and that our mission is to "warp your children's brains and make sure they know how evil capitalism is." In total, prior to the attempted rampage, Beck had attacked the Tides Foundation 29 times. On September 28th, more than a month after the shooting, Beck reiterated his focus on the Tides Foundation, warning, "I'm coming for you." In jailhouse interviews, the gunman confessed he views Beck as a "schoolteacher" who "blew my mind." My would-be killer admitted that Beck "give[s] you every ounce of evidence you could possibly need" to commit violence.

Beck is a self-described "Progressive Hunter" who relies on violent rhetoric. Do you really think that the millions of Americans who describe themselves as "progressive" need to be "hunted down"? If so, to what end?

For hours every day on radio and television, Beck pits American against American, telling his audience that our country is under attack by a demonic Nazi-like regime seeking to destroy all that is great about America while insisting it's up to his viewers to resist and revolt. He warned his audience that "these are the most dangerous two years of our republic. Because in the end, in revolutions, the real dangerous killers show up." Beck even compared our government to vampires while instructing his viewers to "drive a stake through the heart of the bloodsuckers" and pretended to poison Speaker Pelosi on television. A few months later, Gregory Giusti was arrested for repeatedly threatening House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- including threatening to destroy her home -- because he was upset over health care reform. The man's mother told a local news station he listens to those with "really radical ideas," adding, "I'd say Fox News or all of those that are really radical."

When I started the Tides organizations 35 years ago, I did so in the very American belief that ordinary citizens had a role to play in our democratic process. It was, I thought, the responsibility of everyone to become engaged in our civic life, and for years we've worked with thousands of Americans to do just that. And, while we support progressive values and goals, we respect the rights and voices of those with whom we disagree on issues. Never in our history have we tolerated employees or grantees that support those who would do harm to others. By supporting Fox News Channel, you and your company are risking your reputation and good standing because they are doing just this.

As you may know, a coordinated advertiser boycott by Media Matters and Color of Change, an online civil rights group, has caused Glenn Beck's Fox News show to lose over 100 sponsors. Despite the campaign's success, Fox insists it has had no impact on the channel's profitability because the overall demand for advertisements on Fox has remained stable. Companies are still paying to advertise on Fox News, but their ads are simply moved to a different time of day. Thus, businesses that pay to broadcast commercials on Fox News are subsidizing Glenn Beck's television show by continuing to pump money into the network. It has become clear that the only way to stop supporting Beck is to stop supporting Fox News.

I respectfully request that you bring this matter of your company's sponsorship of hate speech leading to violence to the attention of your fellow directors as soon as possible. I believe no responsible company should advertise on Fox News due to its recent and on-going deplorable conduct.

While we may agree to disagree about the role our citizens and our government should play in promoting social justice and the common good, there should be no disagreement about what constitutes integrity and professionalism and responsibility in discourse – even when allowing for and encouraging contending diverse opinions intelligently argued. This is not a partisan issue. It's an American issue. No one, left, right or center, wants to see another Oklahoma City.

The next "assassin" may succeed, and if so, there will be blood on many hands. The choice is yours. Please join my call to do the right thing in this regard and put Fox News at arm's length from your company by halting your advertising with them.

Sincerely,

Drummond Pike
CEO and Founder, Tides

Melissa L. Bradley to Build on Organization’s Track Record of Incubating Innovative Ideas to...

September 16, 2010

(SAN FRANCISCO) Today, Tides names Melissa L. Bradley as CEO to continue the organization’s work to find creative solutions to society’s most critical issues – from economic justice to human rights to environmental challenges. Following a six-month national search, Bradley will replace Tides’ founder, Drummond Pike, who will step down after 34 years of leadership.

“We have found in Melissa Bradley a leader who will build on the achievements of Tides to date and use them as a spring board for greater impact in the future,” said Lawrence Litvak, chair of the Tides board of directors. “Her spirit, insight and skills are right for Tides and for the many donors and programs we represent in community health, economic development, youth services, civil and human rights, the environment, and more.”

Tides works in partnership with donors and leaders to create a better world by leveraging and advancing new thinking and translating ideas into action. Bradley brings extensive knowledge of Tides, having served on the board of the Tides Foundation and as chair of Tides, and a strong background in creative and innovative leadership. Bradley founded New Capitalist, an organization that leverages human, financial, and social capital to create economically profitable and sustainable individuals, businesses and communities. At Green for All, she created the Capital Access Program and assisted in the creation of the Energy Efficiency Opportunity Fund and the Green Jobs Award Program. Bradley was selected as a Soros Justice Fellow for her innovation in the area of criminal justice.

“This new role with Tides creates an opportunity to re-imagine what’s possible to support innovation and entrepreneurship in solving today’s most pressing problems,” said Melissa Bradley. “I will work to advance the next generation of leadership in the areas of community impact, thought leadership and asset management.”

Drummond Pike, one of the original social entrepreneurs, has evolved Tides from a great idea to one of the top 100 social sector organizations in the United States. His leadership leaves the organization well-positioned to pursue extraordinary opportunities to reach new levels of excellence.

“I am inspired by Drummond’s vision of social enterprise and what he has built over the past 34 years,” said Vikki Spruill, a member of the Tides board of directors. “His ability to identify and provide critical support services within the progressive social movement space as well as provoke new models and ideas for real solutions to problems makes him an unparalleled leader in the field. He leaves with the assurance that we will carry his dream forward at a time when our planet needs it most.”

Tides’ new leadership will continue to drive the organization’s ambitious agenda and high expectations for the impact of its partnerships. Tides’ has a passion for incubating new ideas and organizations and serves as a vital resource for the nonprofit sector through its grantmaking, nonprofit management, and nonprofit real estate programs. In partnership with its donors, Tides granted more than $100 million in 2009 alone, and it manages more than 200 nonprofit projects, using extensive expertise to provide a framework that reduces administrative hurdles and allows organizations to spend more time and energy focused on achieving important missions.

About Tides
Tides actively promotes change toward broadly shared economic opportunity, robust democratic processes and the opportunity to live in a healthy and sustainable environment where human rights are preserved and protected. Founded in 1976, Tides offers an array of services that amplifies the efforts of forward-thinking philanthropists, foundations, activists and organizations to make the world a better place. With offices in San Francisco and New York City, Tides provides fiscal sponsorship for over 200 groups across the country, operates and supports green nonprofit centers and granted more than $100 million in 2009 alone.
Tides Initiates Executive Transition

Tides today announced the commencement of an executive transition that will ultimately result in...

Tides today announced the commencement of an executive transition that will ultimately result in new leadership for the 33-year-old organization. Philanthropic pioneer and Tides founder, Drummond Pike, will step down from his role as CEO in the coming year. The Tides Board of Directors has initiated a search for a successor, and Pike will continue in his current role as CEO until the search and leadership transition is concluded.

“As Founder and CEO, Drummond leaves a legacy of innovation and capacity to a sector that had historically been fragmented and overlooked,” said Melissa Bradley Burns, Tides Board Chair. “As one of the first ‘social entrepreneurs,’ Drummond has evolved Tides from a great idea to one of the top 100 social sector organizations in the United States.

Bradley continues, “The board is pleased that Drummond remains committed to leading Tides until a new CEO is retained, and the board is also excited about this new opportunity for change and looks forward to working with the senior staff to ensure a successful transition. We expect the change to provide extraordinary opportunities for the organization to reach new levels of excellence.”

While ideas and structural innovations are part of Pike’s legacy, the deep commitment to mission and purpose will most likely be the lasting element to which future leaders of Tides will turn. After his successor is named, the Tides Board hopes that Drummond will agree to a continuing role supporting the organization.

Notes on How to Design a Conference

Paula Goldman, reflecting on the aftermath of Momentum. From Skoll's Social Edge forum.

"I would never say that." This was the response of Drummond Pike, CEO and Founder of Tides, when I asked him if he saw the Momentum Conference becoming an institution like the TED conference. It was my last question of our interview. He smiled wryly and was rushed off to his next appointment.

Fair response, of course, but also a fair question. In fact one could see the influence of the TED aesthetic at play at the Momentum conference-- especially in the theatrical staging of presentations, and the relatively sophisticated use of multimedia enhancements... and indeed, even in the clean visual branding of the conference itself.

But this was no cheap TED imitation.

Prom Night in Mississippi was screened on Tuesday at the Momentum Conference in San Francisco. It’s a good movie because it is so thought-provoking. After you see it, you and your friends will definitely still be talking about it.

The documentary focused on the town of Charleston, Mississippi. In 1954 Charleston High School was asked to desegregate, but school officials didn't take immediate action. Instead, it took the school another 16 years to open its doors to black students. Years later, there was still one tradition they weren’t willing to change-- prom. The school continued to hold two separate proms, one for black students and another for white students.

In the past several decades, we have seen a tide-shift in the way we think about social change. It is a shift towards recognizing the interconnectedness of issues; a paradigm in which words 'resistance' and 'domination' are being trumped by words like 'effectiveness' and 'results.' It is a shift away from seeing any one individual or group as 'the enemy,' and towards seeing every single individual and group as part of the solution -- a critical part of the solution at that.

Werbach: Emblematic of the Tide-shift?

Live from the Momentum Conference, on the Social Edge forum

In the past several decades, we have seen a tide-shift in the way we think about social change. The growing popularity of social entrepreneurship (both as a concept and a movement) is one major part of this, but it is just part. It is a shift towards a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of issues, a paradigm in which words like 'effectiveness' and 'results' have trumped words like 'resistance, and 'domination.' It is a shift away from seeing any one individual, group, or organization as 'the enemy,' and towards seeing every single individual, group, and organization as part of the solution-- a critical part of the solution at that.

If there is any one person whose journey is representative of these kinds of shifts, it may well be Adam Werbach, who I had a chance to chat with today before he gave a talk in the Carbon Plenary here at the Momentum Conference.

The Fog of Activism

Lloyd Nimetz on "Activism" vs. "Social Entrepreneurship" - live from the Momentum Conference

We are swimming in the fog of historic change in the social-change arena. At the core of this transition -- or at least a symptom of it -- is the shift in language. Obama's ability to recognize and unify a latent progressive movement in America depended on his effective use of language. There are lots of new words floating around. For example, I just co-authored a paper with the UNDP on what we called "Open-replication investing". People like me are inventing terminology right and left partly because we can't find the right terms that fit and partly because we like making things up.

The most important words that I want to focus on are those that change-agents identify with: those words that define who you are. If somebody asks you at a cocktail party "what do you do?", what title do you answer with? Am I an activist or a social entrepreneur? Identity is one of the principal motivators behind people in general and especially in civil society, philanthropy and volunteerism so this is not just a matter of semantics. Understanding the decline of the title 'activist' and the rise of the 'social entrepreneur' unearths what is happening around us today and gives us a glimpse of what the social-change arena will look like tomorrow.

Our country and our still new president are facing a political crisis moment. Stacked against us are fundamental issues – health care, climate change, war, and a still-floundering economy. How each and all of these issues are resolved (or not) may well determine the success of Obama's presidency.

With health reform and the so-called “public option” reportedly on life support (although some activists strongly disagree with that prognosis), and the increasingly unpopular Afghanistan war on the verge of yet another escalation, many progressives and Democrats are frustrated, angry, or simply scratching their heads in disbelief. The Obama they thought they elected is not meeting their expectations.

Reza presented testimony on the abuses to the UN Committee to Eliminate Racial Discrimination in Geneva in 2008 and also helped found Centro Macehualli, a nationally recognized day labor center managed by the laborers.
Alex Gibney’s 2008 Oscar-winning film Taxi to the Dark Side examines the controversial death by torture of Dilawar, an Afghan taxi driver at Bagram Air Base. There is no longer any doubt that torture has been committed at Bagram Air Base and Abu Ghraib despite The Geneva Convention. Taxi to the Dark Side chronicles how the practice came to Afghanistan and Iraq from Guantanamo. It’s a chilling display of how far the U.S. Government has veered from principles of human rights and justice in the “War on Terror.”

Tides President, Drummond Pike, to Receive National Philanthropy Day Award

Philanthropic leader will be presented with Outstanding Foundation Professional Award on November...

San Francisco, Calif. -- October 27, 2004 – Drummond Pike, founder and president of The Tides Family of Organizations, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Foundation Professional Award at the 2004 National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon in San Francisco. This annual award is sponsored to thank a foundation professional who individually initiates creative nonprofit efforts and who works to develop partnerships in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.

Drummond was selected for his unique contributions in developing the field of grantmaking. Throughout his career, he has supported grassroots and public interest organizations through environmental and social change philanthropy. Drummond founded Tides Foundation in 1976 and pioneered the use of donor advised funds to support grassroots and public interest organizations on a national scale. Drummond’s entrepreneurial approach to promoting healthy societies also led to the creation of Tides Center, the largest fiscal sponsorship organization in nation. Through his leadership, Tides has also fostered the creation of Groundspring.org, Thoreau Center for Sustainability and Tides Canada Foundation.

“We are pleased to recognize the legacy and significant contributions of Drummond Pike to the philanthropic sector,” said Lorraine Carlson, President of the Board, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Golden Gate Chapter (AFP-GGC). “Drummond’s vision to move away from the traditional foundation model changed philanthropy as we knew it in the seventies, and he is still challenging and changing the way that it works today. His goal of removing obstacles between people and their good intentions has grown into a impressive network of organizations providing a full spectrum of services to donors and nonprofits.”

Over the course of its 28 years, Tides Foundation has granted more than $400 million to thousands of nonprofit organizations working for positive social change. The foundation works with individual and institutional donors committed to a society based on fairness, equal justice and equally shared economic opportunities and it promotes environmental sustainability and a robust democratic process. In addition, Tides provides management and support services to more than 25 small private foundations, as well as the membership-based Threshold Foundation.

Drummond is one of seven leaders in philanthropy who will be honored during this year’s National Philanthropy Day events in the Bay Area hosted by The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Golden Gate Chapter, and Northern California Grantmakers. He was chosen for the award by unanimous agreement of a committee of nonprofit, philanthropic, and community leaders from throughout the Bay Area. The award ceremony will take place at a gala luncheon on Monday, November 15, 2004, at the San Francisco Marriott. It is hoped that the giving spirit of the awardees will inspire other individuals and organizations and spread the impact of community-giving. For more information about National Philanthropy Day, visit www.afp-ggc.org/npd/.

About Tides Foundation
Since 1976, Tides Foundation has partnered with donors and institutions by offering donor-advised funds, philanthropic advice and management services for progressive social change philanthropy. Tides Foundation is committed to strengthening community-based nonprofit organizations and the progressive movement through national and global philanthropy.

Tides Foundation is a part of The Tides Organizations, a group of nonprofit organizations that share a common vision for a healthy society—a society based on the principles of social justice, broadly shared economic opportunity, robust democratic process and sustainable environmental practices. The Tides Organizations include Tides Foundation, Tides Center, Tides, Inc, Groundspring.org, Thoreau Center for Sustainability and Community Clinics Initiative.
