

Healthcare challenges are intensified in communities of color -- economic inequalities, health disparities, and racial and cultural differences play a role in compounding the challenges. Dr. Bracho discusses these issues in her presentation.
Dr. America Bracho is the founder and Executive Director of Latino Health Access, a nonprofit devoted to promoting healthy living and disease prevention in Orange County, California. She is recognized at the local, regional, and national levels as an expert in the area of Latino health issues, health education, minority women, cultural competency, community organizing, diabetes education, and HIV; and she has received several awards for her contributions to the Latino community. She has been a trainer, presenter, and consultant for numerous government and private agencies including: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The National Council of La Raza, Johns Hopkins University, the Pan American Health Organization, and many others. Her breadth of experience spans to include clinical work both in the U.S. and in her native Venezuela, hosting health education radio and TV talk shows, and managing large-scale health programs, such as the AIDS projects for Latino Family Services. She serves on the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Health Disparities, the advisory committees for the Marguerite Casey Foundation, and the Kellogg Foundation.
